Hat and Bag Set

Whether you travel every day of the week or embark only at vacation time, you will find this roomy carry-all bag and feather-light turban are a girl's best friends on bus, train, car or trans-atlantic liner!

Coats & Clark's O.N.T. "Speed-Cro-Sheen" Mercerized Cotton, Art. C.44:
3 balls of No. 10-A Canary Yellow
2 balls of No. 131 Fudge Brown

Milwards Steel Crochet Hook No. 2/0 (double zero).

Clark's O.N.T. Plastic Knitting Pin No. 8.

Piece of cardboard (for bottom of bag).
¼ yard of yellow felt (for bag lining).

Gauge: 5½ sc make 1 inch.

BAG:
Starting at center of bottom with Canary Yellow, ch 11.
1st rnd: 3 sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch across. 3 sc in last ch; working along opposite side of starting chain, make sc in each ch across. Join with sl st to first sc.
2nd rnd: Ch 1, sc in same place as sl st, sc in each sc around, increasing 3 sc evenly on each end- to inc 1 sc, make 2 sc in 1 sc. Join.
3rd to 13th rnds incl: Repeat 2nd rnd. Cut 10 strands of Canary Yellow, each 21 inches long.
14th rnd: Working over 10 strands of Canary Yellow, make sc in back loop of each sc around. Join. Cut off remaining strands.

SIDEPIECE:
15th rnd: Sc in back loop of each sc around. Join.
16th and 17th rnds: Sc in each sc around. Join.
18th rnd: Ch 3, working over knitting pin, make sc in each sc around. Join to top of ch-3. Repeat the last 3 rnds for pattern, increasing 6 sc evenly around every 1½ inches until Sidepiece measures 8½ inches ending with 2 rnds of sc. Break off.
With Fudge Brown make a chain 38 inches long. Sl st in each ch across. Make 10 more strips the same way. Weave strip between vertical bars on 18th rnd, making 9 knots evenly spaced around. Fasten ends on wrong side. Fill in all wide sc rnds the same way, staggering knots as illustrated.

CORD (Make 2):
Cut 12 strands of Canary Yellow, each 2 yards long. Twist these strands tightly, then double these strands and twist in the opposite direction. Pass cords through to wrong site on 5th wide sc rnd from top and fasten ends securely.
Cut a piece of cardboard the same size as bottom of bag. Place inside bag. Line with felt.

HAT:
Starting at lower edge with Canary Yellow, ch 110. Join, being careful not to twist.
1st rnd: Sc in each ch around.
2nd rnd: Sl st in next 6 sc, sc in each sc to within last 6 sc, sl st in remaining 6 sc.
3rd rnd: Ch 3, working over knitting pin, make sc in each st around. Join to top of ch-3.
4th and 5th rnds: Sl st in next 9 sts, sc in each st to within last 9 sts, st st in remaining 9 sts.
6th rnd: Repeat 3rd rnd.
7th and 8th rnds: Sl st in next 12 sts, sc in each st to within last 12 sts, sl st in remaining 12 sts.
9th rnd: Repeat 3rd rnd.
10th and 11th rnds: Sl st in next 15 sts, sc in each st to within last 15 sts, sl st in remaining 15 sts.
12th rnd: Repeat 3rd rnd.
13th rnd: Sl st in next 18 sts, sc in each st to within last 18 sts, sl st in remaining 18 sts.
14th rnd: Sl st in next 18 sts, sc in each sc, decreasing 6 sc evenly spaced- to dec 1 sc, work off 2 sc as 1 sc. Sl st in last 18 sts.
15th rnd: Repeat 3rd rnd.
16th rnd: Sl st in next 21 sts, sc in each st to within last 21 sts, sl st in remaining 21 sts.
17th rnd: Sl st in next 21 sts, sc in each sc, decreasing 6 sc evenly spaced, sl st in last 21 sts.
18th rnd: Repeat 3rd rnd.
19th to 24th rnds incl: Repeat the last 3 rnds.
25th rnd: Repeat 3rd rnd.
26th rnd: Repeat 16th rnd.
27th rnd: * Sc in next st, dec 1 sc. Repeat from * around. Break off.

Work 8 strips as for Bag, each 42 inches long. Leaving 4 inches free at each end, weave strips between vertical bars, making knots as for Bag. Tie knots closely together on last wide sc rnd, drawing in to head size. Tie free ends together on each rnd, make a knot 2 inches from center knot at each end. Cut off remainder of strips. Gather back seam in to measure 2 inches.

Pink Embroidered Bolero Pattern

Size 12-14 (note: 1950’s sizes were much smaller than modern sizes!)
Snuggle up in this gaily fringed bolero, scattered with tiny rosebuds.

Coats & Clark’s O.N.T. “Speed-Cro-Sheen” Mercerized Cotton, Art. C.44:
15 balls of No. 123-A Flamingo.

Royal Mouliné Mercerized Cotton, Art. 916:
2 skeins of No. 590 Eggshell.

Milwards Steel Crochet Hooks No. 2/0 (double zero) and No. 1.

7 pearl buttons
Tiny black beads for embroidery

GAUGE: 5 sc make 1 inch; 6 rows make 1 inch.

BACK:
Starting at lower edge with No. 2/0 hook, chain 65.
1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch across. Ch 1, turn.
2nd to 5th rows incl: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn.
6th row: Make 2 sc in first sc (inc made), sc in each sc across, make 2 sc in last sc (66 sc). Ch 1, turn.
7th and 8th rows: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn.
9th row: Repeat 6th row. Continue to work in this manner, making 1 inc at each side on every 3rd row until 16 rows have been completed.
17th row: Repeat 6th row.
18th row: Repeat 7th row. Repeat last 2 rows twice (78 sc on 22nd row). At end of 22nd row ch 23 for sleeve.
23rd row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch across, sc in each sc across. Ch 23 for 2nd sleeve. Turn.
24th row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch and in each sc across. Ch 1, turn.
25th row: Sc in each sc across (122 sc). Ch 1, turn.
26th row: Make 2 sc in first sc, sc in each sc across. 2 sc in last sc.
27th, 28th and 29th rows: Repeat 25th row. Repeat 26th to 29th rows until 55 rows have been completed (138 sc).

To Shape Shoulders:
1st row: Sl st in next sc (dec made), sc in each sc across to within last sc. Ch 1, turn (another dec made).
2nd to 20th rows incl: Repeat first row (98 sts).
21st, 22nd and 23rd rows: Sl st in next 3 sc, sc across to within last 3 sc. Ch 1, turn.
24th to 28th rows incl: Sl st in next 4 sc, sc across to within last 4 sc. Ch 1, turn (40 sts).

To Shape Neck:
1st row: Sl st in next 3 sc, sc in each of next 13 sc. Ch 1, turn.
2nd row: (Neck edge) Sl st in next 2 sc, sc in each sc across (11 sc). Ch 1, turn.
3rd row: Sl st in next 3 sc, sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. Repeat last 2 rows until 1 sc remains.
7th row: Sc in sc. Break off, leaving a long strand for sewing. Skip 8 sc along neck edge at center back. Attach thread to next sc, sc in same sc, sc in next 12 sc. Ch 1, turn. Complete to correspond with other side.

FRONT (Make 2):
Starting at lower edge with No. 2/0 hook, ch 2.
1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook. Ch 2, turn.
2nd row: (Front edge) Make 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook (2 sc increased at front edge), sc in next sc. Ch 1, turn.
3rd row: (Side edge) Sc in next 2 sc, make 2 sc in next sc (1 inc made). Ch 2, turn.
4th row: Make 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 4 sc. Ch 1, turn.
5th row: Sc in next 5 sc, make 1 inc in next sc. Ch 2, turn.
6th row: Inc 2 sc at front edge, sc in each sc across, making 2 sc in last sc (inc at side edge)- 10 sc on row. Ch 1, turn. Continue making increases in this manner at front edge, and making 1 increase at side edge every 4th row until 26 rows have been completed, ending with 2 sc in last sc at side edge (45 sc). Ch 19 for sleeve. Turn.
27th row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch across, sc in each sc across, making an inc at front edge (64 sts). Continuing to make increases at front edge as established, work until 31 rows have been completed, ending with an inc at front edge (70 sc). Ch 1, turn.
32nd row: Make 2 sc in next sc (1 inc made instead of 2), sc in each sc across, making an inc in last sc at sleeve edge. Ch 1, turn. Continue to make 1 inc at front edge each row and 1 inc at sleeve edge every 8th row until 41 rows have been completed, ending at front edge (82 sc). Ch 1, turn.
42nd row: Sc in each sc across (no inc made at front edge). Ch 1, turn.
43rd row: Sc in each sc across, making an inc in last sc at front edge. Ch 1, turn.
44th row: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. Continuing to make an inc at front edge every other row, work until 48 rows have been completed, ending with an inc in last sc at sleeve edge (86 sc). Ch 1, turn.

To Shape Front Edge:
1st row: Sc in each of the next 85 sc, sl st in last sc at front edge (dec made). Ch 1, turn.
2nd row: Skip first sl st made, sl st in next st (dec made), sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn.
3rd row: Sc in next 83 sc, sl st in last sc. Ch 1, turn. Continue to make 1 dec at front edge every row for 5 more rows. Ch 1, turn.

To Shape Shoulder:
1st row: (Sleeve edge) Sl st in next 3 sts, sc in each sc across, make a dec at front edge as before. Ch 1, turn.
2nd row: Sl st in next sc, sc in each sc across to last sc, sl st in last sc (dec made). Ch 1, turn.
3rd row: Skip first sl st, sl st in next 2 sc, sc across, making a dec at front edge as before. Repeat 2nd and 3rd rows until 30th row of shoulder shaping has been completed.
31st row: Repeat 3rd row (3 sc on last row). Ch 1, turn.
32nd row: Sl st in next sc, make sc in next sc, sl st in next sc. Ch 1, turn.
33rd row: Sc in sc. Break off, leaving a long strand for sewing.

COLLAR:
With No. 1 hook, ch 6.
1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch across. Ch 1, turn.
2nd row: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. Repeat 2nd row until piece measures 14 inches. Break off, leaving a long strand for sewing.

Block pieces. Sew shoulder and underarm seams. Sew Collar in place.
Attach thread to Right Front at center point, and working with No. 1 hook, sc closely along edge to within ¼ inch of collar. Ch 1, turn, sc in next st, ch 5, skip 3 sc, sl st in next sc- buttonloop made. Make 6 more buttonloops, spacing evenly apart to center point. Ch 1, turn.
Next row: * Sc closely over next loop, sl st in sl st of last row. Repeat from * across. Then sc closely around edges, keeping work flat. Join to first sc at center front. Break off. Sc closely around each Sleeve edge. Join and break off.
Embroider as illustrated in groups of 3 lazy daisy sts, with 2 black beads at base of each group. Sew on pearl buttons.

FRINGE:
Wind thread around cardboard 1½ inches wide. Cut one end of fringe. Double strand, insert hook in sc at Right Front edge, draw loop through, then draw loose ends through loop on hook. Pull up tightly. Make a fringe in each sc around lower edges of bolero and around sleeve edges. Trim evenly to measure 1 inch.

Poppy Skirt Trim Pattern

2 balls of No. 126 Spanish Red
1 ball each of No. 12 Black, No. 1 White and No. 49-A Killarney.

Milwards Steel Crochet Hook No. 2/0 (double zero).

A felt skirt.

POPPY (Make 5)
Starting at center with Black, ch 2.
1st rnd: 8 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Join.
2nd rnd: Picking up front loop only, make (sc, ch 3) twice in each sc around. Join and break off.
3rd rnd: Attach White to back loop of any sc, sc in same place. * ch 3, 2 dc in same place, 2 dc in next sc, ch 3, sc in same place, sc in next sc. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 3. Join and break off.

FIRST PETAL
1st row: Attach Red to top of ch-3 on any petal, sc in same place, half dc in next dc, 2 dc in each of next 2 dc, half dc in next dc, sc in top of next ch-3, turn.
2nd to 5th rows incl: Sc in sc, half dc in next half dc, dc in each dc, increasing 2 dc- to inc 1 dc, make 2 dc in 1 dc- half dc in next half dc, sc in sc. Turn. Break off at end of 5th row. Attach Red to first sc made on first row of petal, sc closely around petal. Break off. Complete other petals the same way.

STEM
With Killarney, ch 20.
1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 2 ch, ch 2, sc in 2nd  ch from hook, sc in side of last sc, sc in same ch as last sc, sc in next 3 ch, ch 5, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 3 ch, sc in side of next sc, sc in same ch as last sc, sc in next 3 ch, ch 8, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 6 ch, sc in side of next sc, sc in same ch as last sc, sc in next 5 ch, ch 11, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 2 ch, ch 2, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in side of next sc, sc in same ch as last sc, sc in next 3 ch, ch 4, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 2 ch, sc in side of next sc, sc in same ch as last sc, sc in next 4 ch, sc in side of next sc, sc in each remaining ch.
